Acupuncture is a medicinal modality that follows the natural laws of life energy, known as Qi, (pronounced chee) through the use of hair-fine needles which are applied to specific “points” on the body.
These points are grouped along specific meridians or channels that traverse the entire body. Meridians are where the Qi or life energy is supposed to naturally flow freely through the body, to maintain health. As long as the Qi flows freely through these meridians, health is maintained. When the flow of Qi is either absent, deficient, blocked, or excessive in an area, health is disrupted, resulting in illness or pain. By stimulating the appropriate acupuncture points along these meridians, the Qi is released & regulated, health is restored.
“Since Qi is the source of all things, the movement of the Qi dynamic is omnipresent.”
Studies indicate that acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous systems. Evidence has shown that the insertion of acupuncture needles release endorphins from the brain which make acupuncture particularly effective in pain control.
Among a host of other factors, acupuncture affects blood sugars, triglyceride levels in the blood, cholesterol, the functioning of the gastro-intestinal system and the activity of the endocrine system. It also improves circulation, allowing the body to heal itself more quickly and more completely.
Acupuncture works synergistically with each individual’s body, harmonizing and balancing Qi. Once the Qi is flowing properly, the body naturally starts to balance and heal itself.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, medically and philosophically, moderation in all things is advocated, as is living in harmony with nature and striving for balance in all things.
Prevention is a key goal of Chinese Medicine, and emphasis is placed on educating the patient to live responsibly within the laws of nature, including the four seasons.
