"Channel or Meridian" means pathway
The Medical Chinese Classics' explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam, backing up the flow in one part of the body and restricting it in others.
The meridians are influenced by needling acupuncture points. The needles unblock the obstruction at the dams, & reestablish regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture will help the internal organs correct imbalances in energy production, digestion, and absorption. Acupuncture promotes the circulation of life energy throughout the entire body.
Western science concludes that needling acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the internal regulating system.
Improved energy and biochemical balances, induced by acupuncture needles results in stimulation of the body's own natural healing ability, promoting physical and emotional well-being.
